I have an AVI file that the audio is way too quiet on. Only way I know I can make it louder is through VirtualDub. Problem is once I set it to Full processing mode for the audio, I get an error when I try to play back the preview.
No audio compressor could be found to decompress the source audio format

I already have the AC3 filter program installed as well as Divx if either of those might help.
Gspot says:

I had some problems but after I had installed the newest K-Lite codec pack i had no problems
I tried the ac3 acm thing above but that didn’t seem to help. SO I used the Soopa Loud file and that seemed to work just fine.

and a couple of experiments.
If you get messages like «no audio compressor could be found. source format tag: xxxx» from VirtualDub, you should manually add the following line to your windowssystem.ini file under [drivers32] section:
msacm.xxxx=ac3acm.acm
(in my case xxxx=2000 too, but i’ve heard something about 0050 or 0x50)
may be it’s possible to use something else instead of ac3acm.acm
Virtualdub doesn’t deal with 6 channel AC3 very well. It works best if you open the audio as a seperate file > Audio > Audio from other file. You’ll need the AC3 input plugin.
Edit: Soopafresh way is a better solution though if no encoding is necessary.

Bam! That was it. Installed the AC3 ACM codec, and now my virtualdub adds the audio as well as the video.
I just happened upon this forum thread, searching for an answer to my virtualdub audio error as mentioned at the beginning of the thread, and I found the answer here.
I’m a newb here, don’t know names, so I will just thank you all with this post.
You might run into the same problem with AAC audio as well and there is an AACACM codec available also at http://home.comcast.net/
fcchandler/AACACM/index.html. Just in case anyone happens to need it as I did for Virtualdub
conversion.

Can you mess up anything in your computer, any current audio connections or sounds, by downloading multiple audio codecs?

Generally codecs only change how sounds encoded in audio or audio/video files such as an AVI, mp4, mp2, mp3, flv, etc are decoded. These videos or audios such as songs are compressed to save space as files and shorten downloads and upload times over networks. They then need DEcompressed, hence the name CO mpressor DEC ompressor. They may, and probably will, alter which ones are used for certain audio so some songs MAY not play any longer that used to be ok.
On the other hand, I HAVE had programs such as converters, muxers, editors and other programs that come with their own codecs mess up my sound. It’s not the codecs so much as the fact they can alter certain computer settings to make the most use of their function. This doesn’t happen too often but, with the dozens of programs and utilities I’ve installed, it has happened mabybe 4-5 times. The latest was after installing a Creative sound card firmware update, I no longer had sound from my speakers with headset plugged in. That is just a setting that I could change, but the fact is it DID change my audio setting.
The biggest thing codec do is fill up your computer with multiple codecs used for the same format organized in a certain order. Since your computer usually uses the one with the highest ‘Merit’, the others are just cluttering you computer UNTIL you deinstall some, in which case they become higher and are used again.
Codec packs in general are known to be bothersome because there are so many, good and bad, so be sure you download ones you have researched and checked reviews for. I have my favorite that is updated regularly and has not failed me. It’s the only one I install to keep the quantity at a minimum.

I downloaded AC3ACM and have three files in the 64 folder:
AC3ACM.acm
AC3ACM64.inf
Install the 64-bit codec.bat
Clicking on the «install» .bat file produces this message:
An error ocurred while copying the AC3ACM.acm. Cannot copy file to destination directory.
I want videos to play in Virtual Dub with sound. How do I do this? Should I be using the x86, not the 64?
edit: the x86 bat install produces same message.

Try install codec by right click on AC3ACM64.inf file and select Install
Tried that. for a millisecond, I saw a box appear then immediately disappear. Opened a Matroska video in Virtual Dub. Same audio decompressor not found message.
edit: .avi files do play with sound now in Virtual Dub, not Matroska (.mkv).
Do you have Matroska plugin by fccHandler for VirtualDub?
Matroska.vdplugin in plugins32 always has been there
Right click on the bat file and select Run As Administrator.
What MediaInfo report about type of sound have in MKV file?

That’s the message that appears. Don’t know what You mean about Media Info Report.

What purpose you want open mkv file in VirtualDub?
I want to open an .mkv file in Virtual Dub and play it with sound.

Have already done that. But, I did it again just now (install the ACM download) . Any mkv file will not play with sound. Same «no decompressor . » message.
Did you try run bat file run as administrator ?
Do you have windows 7 64 bit?

Restarted, same problem.
Downloaded 64. In the VirtualDub-1.10.4-AMD64 folder you see the plugins I copy pasted from the old VD 32 bit plugins folder. Right click on any. mkv file, open with, VirtualDub-1.10.4-AMD64 folder click on either one of the VD exes and I get:

The file ‘F:Destination Flavour Japan. Mkv is of an.unknown or unsupported file type.

You need to use all 32 bit components with 32 bit VirtualDub. You need to use all 64 bit components with 64 bit VirtualDub.
Forget using 64 bit VirtualDub. It’s not as stable and not as many filters are available in 64 bit versions. Use 32 bit VirtualDub and 32 bit filters.

I have an MP4 video file that I have succeeded in importing using a downloaded MP4 plugin, but when trying to play it, I keep getting the error «No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format. (source format tag: 00ff)» I have K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, but have no idea what to do with it. I also am a little confused on how to install plugins for VDub, as it didn’t come with a pre-created folder.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
AAC cannot work in VirtualDub. If you find, download AAC decoder or convert AAC to WAV and use for external audio.
With MediaCoder or AudioCoder or another converter program can convert AAC to WAV.
So what would be my options as to import this video into VDub without/very little loss of quality?
Download and install FFMpeg and Directshow import plugins for VDub. And download «UT Video Codec» or «CamStudio Video Codec». This codecs lossless.
Use AudioCoder and Convert AAC video to PCM WAV format. Open VirtualDub, import video, after choose «Audio > Audio from other file» and select WAV file. After your works done in VDub, export video AVI format with lossless codecs and after encode MP4 this video. XmediaRecode is good program for encode videos.
I’m kind of a newb. If it’s not too much trouble, could you give me a step by step tutorial just to get the video to work in VDub?
3.) Download AudioCoder and install.
4.) Run AudioCoder, open MP4 File.
5.) Under «Audio» tab «Format > PCM» select and run «Start«. Create WAV file.
6.) Open VirtualDub and open MP4 File.
7.) «Audio > Audio from other file. » and select WAV file. It’s done

32-bit plugins not work in 64-bit VDub and 64-bit plugins are less. 32-bit Vdub works in 64-bit system very well.

Not work under Windows 7 64-bit.
I actually downloaded that and put it in the «plugins» folder that I had to create myself since there wasn’t one in the 64Bit VDub download. It didn’t work. However, I had to get another plugin to even import the MP4 video in question, which actually did work.
It’s a 32-bit plugin, I believe, so it’ll likely only work with the 32-bit version of VirtualDub.
This is not plugin, this is codec and only works under 32-bit OS.
That’s what I get for keeping the VirtualDub/plugins discussion in mind.
I may have missed it but did you get an answer to the large file size you asked about? Most times you will have to set Video -> compression and possibly Audio -> compression to the VFW(video) codecs and ACM(Audio) codecs you have on your machine.
Video codecs will show up if VFW codecs are configured to use. If you have FFDShow or Klite installed, you set them to use under configuration -> VFW configuration.
A trick you can use when a file doesn’t like your audio and refuses to play is just select Audio -> «Direct stream copy» and «Select from other file» and choose the input file again. It will use and copy the original audio.
NOTE: VirtualDub installs with just a plugins32 folder now and you can put all the plugins in it, both .vdf and .vdplugin plugins. You should find the Internal plugins (*.vdf) already installed in it.
NOTE: The FFInput and DshowInput decoders usually need to be manually selected by going to file, open, and drop down the type box and select them. They usually always work since ffinput uses FFMpeg to decode and dshowinput uses the directshow filters that Media Player would normally use. Just remember to set compression on video and audio or the file will be large.
Hope everything works well for you. I use VirtualDub a lot and have configured the beta version (1.10.3) to use ffmpeg in the external encoder feature so VirtualDub can save to FLV, Mpeg2, and MP4 as well as AVI now.

I’ve converted a (non-copyright!) dvd using DVDshrink 3.2 and renamed the vob of interest to *.mpg. Opening it in VDmod is apparently successful, an AC3 audio stream is listed and has a matching duration and sensible-looking parameters. If I try to play or demux the file in VDmod I get the message «no audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format». I’ve checked the same file in Gspot which reports a successful render and lists the various codecs, including audio. I can play the file with Ulead DVD Player and there is definitely audio present in the file. How do I get VDmod to link into the codec pool and use the appropriate one? I need to filter the audio and I think VDmod should be the ideal place to do it! Am I right?

I’ve been researching since posting my question and I’m thinking now that AC3 audio is so deeply embedded into the video data it’s difficult to process it in a program like VDMod <sigh>.
It would be nice if someone in the know could give a tiny bit of assistance.
I think maybe this project is dead, because there haven’t been any new files since 2003. They probably lost interest.
There’s some good digital video info at afterdawn.com which is a lively forum.

I may be close to the solution.
I had installed the AC3Filter_070b. Everything was apparently going well for Gspot apart when asking for details on the AC3 line. I had then the information that this codec was not properly enabled in the front pannel, although it actually was.
Then I uninstalled it and installed AC3ACM.
But I got the same troubles.
Then I considered in the Multimedia part of the Control Pannel that AC3ACM had been installed with priority 14.
I just changed to priority 15 And !!!!
MIRACLE !

Well ! I must admit I dislike that way of «solving» problems. It is just pragmatical, I do not understand exactly WHY it is solved like that. And if it is solved or if it just a way around.-

I installed AC3ACM a while ago without any luck. I will try the priority change.
I hope it will work for me as I have some 7 hours of DVD material to process and was dreading having to decode it all, modify it seperately as audio and video and then recode it.
I must admit that messing about with codecs gives me the horrors — it is easy to fix one thing and stuff up six others!

I definitely agree with you about the codecs mess.
To be more precise in my «solution» :
As it sounded strange to me that downgrading the priority of a Codec makes things going better for the softwares that use it, I investigated a bit more and found that lessering AC3’s priority had just put it after the Microsoft PCM (Wav uncompressed format) codec.
Maybe the true & unique reason (and that would be more intelligible) is that AC3 must have a lesser priority than PCM.Yes also, it seems that discussions around VDM are not interesting that much people on this site.

I replayed with the priority of the audio codecs and everything going well with Vdub as long as AC3 gets a lower priority (i.e. greater number) than Microsoft PCM.
I finally reordered my list as follows :
1/ Microsoft PCM
2/ Lame
3/ AC3
…..
Just take care in case you also run some voice recognition system. I have been told these softs are very sensitive to the codecs priority order too.-

Короче, парни, ка я понял ошибка тут может быть абсолютно любая —

и т. д.
То есть что дубу в голову взбредет, он и пишет, но корни у проблемы растут из одного места — НЕ хватает банально каких-то кодаков (у дуба они называются плагины).
Чаще всего это АС3.
Даже в тех сборках что я качал, как я понял, плагины нужно грузить дополнительно, может как-то устанавливать, хз.
Об этом можно судить по строке внизу, вот рисунок:
Если VirtualDub подгрузил все фильтры, будет указано, например, Autoloaded 9 filter(s).
Если же указано так:
Autoloaded 9 filter(s) (40 failed). Check Log for details.
Фильтры НЕ загружены! Смотрите логи.
Логи смотреть так:
View -> Log или нажав F8.
Но это бесполезно, там просто будут указаны все фильтры, которые не подгрузились — 9, 40 или 150 штук, сколько там у вас есть.
И ещё. как я нашел инфу на забугорном форуме, нужно смотреть, какая у вас система стоит 32 (86) битная ил и 64-битная.
Поскольку, 32-разрядные плагины могут не работать в 64-битных VDub и наоборот. 
В общем, нужно искать нормальную сборку и накуя эти танцы с бубнами!

Заметил, такая фигня творится только если ставишь портабле-версию, при нормальной установке такого нет!
Так что у кого сыпет ошибками, попробуйте поставить полную версию (в программ файлз).

Вот нашол совет, если виртаулдаб вас мурыжит с файламми mp4, хороший совет как его открыть.
У меня правд не получилось но может кому пригодится
Как открыть файл .mp4 в Vitual Dub:
1. Запускаем Vitual Dub.
2. Открываем нужный видео файл.
3. Выбираем пункт меню «Открыть видеофайл».
4. В диалоге открытия файлов обязательно отмечаем птичкой «Ask for extended options after this dialog».
5. В списке типов файлов обязательно выбираем пункт «Quicktime files».
6. Выбираем .mp4 — файл в списке и нажимаем «Открыть».
7. В появившемся окне «Import options: Quicktime» выбираем Video Decoder Mode = «0 MoviesTask».
Если появилось не это, а другое меню, просто жмём «Ок»
8. Профит.

спасибо братан ничего не получалось до тех пор, пока ставил портабле версию (у мен 64 бит),не мог открыть обычную мп-4, перепробовал все якобы самые лучшие и полные сборки дабов с торентов, в итоге решился поставить полную версию с установкой (на диск Ц) в итоге все заработало, все подгрузилось и без ошибок!

Я в таких случаях ffdshow использую. У него есть настройки VFW декодеров.
А плеера играют через DirectShow версии декодеров.
Которые тоже может понимать VirtualDub, если для него установить DirectShow input driver. Правда, DirectStream Copy тут невозможно будет.
Если в данном avi файле mjpeg или DV сжатие — то можно внутренние декодеры VirtualDuba задействовать.

1. Посмотрите на videohelp.com в разделе Tools версию 1.3.
2. Или лучше — установите WMV input плагин. В современных версиях открыть сможете. Искать ссылку — там же.
Плюс есть плагины импорта mpg, vob, flv, mkv.

draek, поставить нужно специальный FLV Input Plugin для даба. Для выдирания звука из flv лучше использовать «заточенную» под это утилитку, называется FLV Extract.

Для того, чтобы VirtualDub открывал .flv фйлы нужно установить FLV Virtualdub import plugin. Вот офсайт
1. Скачиваем архив с плагином (FLV.zip).
2. Если система 32-bit, то копируем из архива файл FLV.vdplugin в папку Plugins32, которая находится в папке программы VirtualDub -например c:Program FilesVirtualDubPlugins32 — (если ее там нет, то надо создать).
Если система 64-bit, то копируем из архива файл FLV64.vdplugin в папку Plugins64, которая находится в папке программы VirtualDub (если ее там нет, то надо создать).
3. Запускаем VirtualDub.
4. Файл — Открыть видео файл…
5. Открываем .flv файл.
7. Выделяем на таймлайне нужный кусок (если требуется сохранить не весь звук, а только его часть). В противном случае сразу переходим к пункту 8.
8. Файл — Сохранить звук wav…
9. Готово.

Ну вот, раз картинка появилась, то с видео потоком разобрались. Все работает.
Появляющаяся надпись свидетельствует о том, что теперь VirtualDub нужен аудио декодер. Скорее всего, что в вашем flv файле аудио поток имеет формат AAC, с которым VirtualDub по-умолчанию работать не умеет. Нужно его этому научить. Для этого делаем следующее:
1. Скачиваем AAC ACM Codec. Вот офсайт — архив AACACM.zip
2. Распаковываем его и запускаем Install on 32-bit Windows.bat (лежит в папке x86). Соглашаемся со всеми вопросами в процессе установки. Если надо перезагружаем компьютер.
Примечание: VirtualDub в это время должен быть закрыт.
3. Открываем наш flv файл и наслуждаемся звуком и видео.
Если после вышеописанного не проигрывает звук, можно сделать следующее:
1. установить AC-3 ACM Codec. Вот
офсайт.
Процесс установки аналогичен описаному выше. Он необходим для того чтобы VirtualDub мог работать с файлами в которых аудио поток имеет формат AC3 и позволяет его преобразовать в WAV/MP3.
2. заменить установленный AC3 плагин на следующий: офсайт
3. заменить установленный FLV плагин на тот, который я рекомендовал выше (если это не было сделано раньше).

Спасибо! Да, сделал, звук появился и изображение. Пока с роликом ничего не делал. вечером попробую. Интересная прога, хочу именно в ней разобраться.

В файлах *flv звук часто в формате Nellymoser. Как не бился — VD его в упор не видит. Как решить проблему?

CinemaRus, Есть варианты:
1) Искать плюгин, который будет видеть этот формат (правда не факт, что оно существует в природе)
2) Поискать конвертор, который может этот формат перекрутить в читаемое
3) Вынуть аудио-дорожку и обработать ее звуковым редакторо (адобе аудишн, например)

теперь Даб не хочет работать с аудио: пишет No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format (source format tag:2000). Какого-то кодека не хватает?
Я же ясно сказал,что декомпрессор нужен. Есть версии Виртуала с уже с декомпрессором,они как правило поддерживают mpeg2.
Или сам установи, есть Важная тема: Перекодирование в mpeg4, я там и ссылку давал и объяснял как установить. Можешь Поиском по форуму воспользоваться,набери ДЕКОМПРЕССОР AC3, может и выдаст результат.
P.S. Вот отсюда качай AC3 ACM Codec http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/index.html
Далее распакуй в папку с Виртуалом и найди файл AC3ACM.inf Наведи мыша и клик правой кнопкой,выбери пункт УСТАНОВИТЬ. Всё!
