LG Smart TV features a built-in web browser that allows you to access the internet. But, that is not the only feature that stands out. LG is one of the most trusted brands for electronics of all kinds. However, their televisions are extremely popular among casual users and gamers. Not only does LG offer fairly priced models, but they also make sure that their televisions last long.
However, some users have reported running into a shortage of memory on their LG Smart TVs. You may face the “Out of Memory” error only if your LG Smart TV is running on WebOS. Most smart TVs don’t feature a large RAM capacity or internal storage. They don’t feature optimized and powerful hardware. So, an LG Smart TV may not perform as well as your laptop, computer, or even your over-powered phone. It doesn’t take long to clog the little that is available with apps like Netflix, Hulu, Disney, and many more. In the case of a WebOS LG Smart TV, recent apps are stored in system memory to allow users faster access to those apps. In such situations, your LG Smart TV may show you an “Out Of Memory” error when the system memory is full.
In this article, we will talk about what you can do to counter this issue.
1) Restart Your LG Smart TV
When an LG TV customer queried about the memory issue, an LG official responded with the troubleshooting option of turning the TV off and then back on after a few minutes. No apps will be deleted during this process; instead, they will just be forced to close so that other apps can get the necessary RAM space.
2) Clear Cache:
Cache files are stored in your device to access your applications faster than usual. As much as it may be useful, it may sometimes eat a lot of your limited Smart TV storage. It is important to regularly clear these cache data from your device. To clear the cache follow the steps mentioned below:
1) Press Home Button from your remote control.
2) You can see the Web Browser option
3) From the top right corner, select the Menu option.
4) When a popup window appears. Go to Settings.
5) Select the Clear Browsing Data that appears in a white box and press OK.
3) Close Recent Apps
Closing all the apps that are just running in the background and not being used at the moment can help you free up space. This can also help your tackle the out-of-memory error. You can close recent apps by:
1) Open the Launcher Bar and select the Recent Apps option (three vertical bars). It appears at the bottom on the left.
2) Hover over the Recent tiles in the Recent Preview area which you want to delete.
3) By clicking the Close button that appears on the top of the tile you can terminate the app.
4) Update The Software
It is possible that your Smart TV is not on the latest OS/firmware version. Check for pending updates as these contain bug fixes and performance fixes. Update your device and check if the problem still persists.
5) Factory Reset
If non of the above-mentioned fixes works, you can try factory resetting your TV. Before you perform a factory reset, keep in mind that all the records of your usage and all the stored data will be erased from the device’s memory. However, this will most definitely help you with the Out of Memory error.
We hope the fixes mentioned in this post assisted you with solving the issue. If you believe you require professional assistance, please contact LG TV customer care for further assistance.

Hi guys, i recently bought the Lg 42LB650V and yesterday it automatically updated, and i have a problem, when i am using a app for log time, like watching video on youtube, after a while it say’s me something like «Out of Memory, app closed». Please help me what can i do. It displayed this error before the update but never in the youtube app, only when browsing. and i have another problem, when i am watching a video on the web browser, after 10-15 minutes, it displays the same out of memory error, and i watched the same video on my friend’s lg smart tv that hasn’t got webOs, has got the old Lg smart tv OS, cinema 3d , and i watched the complete video without any error, and did lot of other stuff and didn’t got the out of memory error. I bought this LG thinking that it’s a new model so it will not have problems, if i can watch in the old TV, why not in the new TV. Please help me, i am very worried because i will have to change the TV because of the same error that i got in my Sony Smart TV that i returned to the store. HEEEEELP Please.

Just got off the phone to lg support. I was told the web browser shuts down when attempting to stream video ON PURPOSE! Furthermore, once you stream anything from the internet, the cache fills up, does not clear, and prevents the installed apps from functioning properly. I was told that the OS is a web browser NOT a web streaming service and if they allow customers access to stream video they will be in breach of their contractual agreement to the companies who have apps on the TV. This clearly doesn’t happen on tablets or phones, so their logic for creating a sub par product is utter bollocks. I specifically asked the salesman if I could stream video from the internet and was told absolutely yes. When I pointed this out to Lg customer service they re-iterated that a web browser does not confer the ability to stream video. This is misleading the customer, and effectively censoring and filtering internet content. This must stop!
How come Samsung TVs don’t have this problem?

I had the problem for 5 years with 2 separate Tv’s. It is any Smart App like iPlayer or YouTube. The problem is that the memory cache is not managed/cleared properly. Thus the only LG advice is turn off TV for a while then turn it on again.
I have an external HD D for recording and playing programmes which works fine, but definitely had not resolved the Out of Memory errors
I have now spoken to the retailer I purchase it from as it’s still under Warrantee, and got them to admit that as LG cant fix the known error, and as i have proof (video of the error appearing multiple times on multiple occasional,), that the TV is not Fit for Purpose; from the Sale of Goods act. The Smart TV functionality keeps failing with the out of memory error, so TV is not providing promised functionality. Using this argument I am getting a refund for the TV and will never buy an LG TV again.
If under warranty, suggest trying the same approach.

I have exactly the same issue when watching some video over SmartShare (using DLNA connection). It was perfectly fine for a few days, but now after a few minutes of watching some medium quality content (not heavy on a bandwidth, etc) message appears: «Out of memory. App closed». Youtube works fine. Please solve this immediately!

Same here. The browser often restarts with ‘Out of Memory’ error. Especially when watching a video, but sometimes even it there isn’t any video in the page.

Video is on my computer (mac), with media server running on it and sharing content via wifi to router, router has wired connection to 55LB63.
SmartShare crashes («Out of memory. App is closed») after a while (~10minutes) of watching a movie, no matter how big the file is (1080p, 720p, etc…). However, if you pause it for a while, then SmartShare continues to work longer then 10minutes, but crashes later. However, SmartShare does not crash when playing the same files from USB.
It used to work flawlessly for a few days, and suddenly all this came up.
Any thoughts? Related to firmware update maybe (04.30.16)?

Ok, it looks that there is a way around «out if memory. app is closed» message from SmartShare app.
It has been 3hrs non stop full hd movie via DLNA without any crash, here is what i did:
— Fully restart media servers, I use Serviio and plex mostly), re-connect them through ‘device connector’ app.
— Play the movies/media directly from ‘device connector’ app which directly leads to folders on media server (not the sort of compiled list of all movie/etc as SmartShare does).
I assume this might be a temporary solution, because when i ran SmartShare for the 1st time (6days ago) it was all fine for a couple of days and then the problems began (out of memory). Since now all is kinda newly reconnected -I’im just guessing — the TV just dumped some used memory and lets wait for couple of days to see if it stays fine.

Lg’s WebOS sucks, my friend has an old lg smart tv from february 2013 with Netcast, and it works like a ferrari, and it hasn’t got any bugs or problems, it also has html5 and also Flashplayer, i often go to his house and watch some online movies and it doesn’t stop, and the same movie at the same webpage when i watch it, after 10 o 15 minutes it says «Out of memory, app is closed» WTF? I am non satisfied with the new WebOS, FAILED EXPERIMENT FROM LG, LIKE THE SAME HAPPENDED WITH PALM’S WEBOS, AND THEN HP’S WEBOS AND NOW WITH LG’S WEBOS.

I knew there was major memory leaks with this OS. Unreal that LG hasn’t patched this yet. Shame on them. This happens to me, when watching Netflix, Amazon, or DLNA after a few shows. Its so bad, that I literally have to wait 10 seconds before it registers a click. You know the only solution, turn the TV off for about 20 seconds and start again. Basically, rebooting your TV. Its pretty pathetic that you should have to reboot your TV after watching a few shows.
I have heard they are releasing WebOS 2.0 on their 2015 model TV’s. They say the OS is fast. I certainly hope that they allow the 2014 TV’s to upgrade to 2.0.

Yes and LG doesn’t beleive us either, i sayed them that my friend has a 2013 model with netcast and he can watch movies in the web browser without any problems and when i watch the same movie at the same website the tv after 5 minutes sayes out of memory, and they replied me that it’s impossible that a 2013 tv with netcast works beter than a 2014 with webOS,shame on LG, they are just crazy , i’m planning to make a video comparing the 2013 tvs with 2014 and upload it on youtube to prevent people from buying tvs from LG, i’d recommendd them more Samsung, even the cheapest of their tv has a quad core processor and it has more support, LG is a dumb company.

I have a 2012 LG 55LM7600. Its not WebOS, but some other OS. It doesn’t lock up like WebOS does but it isn’t the fastest either. I like WebOS better, but the memory leaks have to stop.
Keep in mind that this is version 1.0. Lets hope with 2.0 these issues are resolved. if not, I may not purchase another LG TV. I have been loyal to them. I own 3 LG TV’s.

The memory doesn’t leak, it’s not a material or like a liquid, the problem is that the OS itself uses too much memory and the apps apart from youtube are programmed in a way that they use memory that they cannot refresh it, the web browser is the worst of them, even if you visit a webpage with very small content , it closes due to memory error, webOS has to be fixed. The youtube app is the only that works nicely and smoothly.

LG is a brand known for its amazing picture quality. While most smart TVs have low internal storage capacity, an LG TV’s memory is even lower by comparison. If you own an LG smart TV, you may receive a frequent “out of memory” error message. Why is this happening?
LG TVs give an “out of memory” error message when they are low on storage space. LG smart TVs have an internal storage of between 2 to 4 GB, and users are advised to keep at least 25% of their storage available at any given time to prevent performance issues.
Knowing why your LG smart TV keeps saying “out of memory” and what to do to clear the message is vital.
Why Does My LG TV Keep Saying “Out of Memory?”
Whether you get the message when you try to download a new application or any time you try to launch Netflix, an “out of memory” error can be frustrating.
There are a couple of things that could be causing your LG TV to keep saying “out of memory.” Some things that may help clear the message include:
- Restarting your TV
- Clearing cache data
- Closing recent apps
- Deleting inactive apps
- Updating your TV software
- Performing a factory reset
Below, we will discuss how these methods can help clear the message. Steps may vary based on your LG TV OS, but these are the things to check.
Restart Your TV
The first thing to try is simply restarting your LG TV. To do this, simply turn the TV off, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on.
Restarting your TV will force all open apps to close, freeing up internal memory for the next time you turn it on.
Clear Cache Data
Cache data stores information, such as preferred settings, to speed up the loading process. However, having too much cache data on your TV is an easy way for your LG TV’s memory to fill up quickly.
Although the cache data helps you quickly access different apps, it becomes useless after the initial loading. Cache data will pile up in your storage, which can bring about the “out of memory” message.
LG smart TVs have two types of cache data — the app cache and the browser cache. Follow the steps below to clear both types of data:
After following all the steps above, your cache data will clear, freeing up internal storage on your TV.
Close Recent Apps
When you exit an app on your LG TV, it continues running in the background. Closing these apps entirely can free up storage and solve “out of memory” messages. To close your recent apps, follow these steps:
- Open “Launcher Browser” from the Home screen.
- Select “Recent Apps,” which can be identified as the three vertical bars at the bottom left of your screen.
- Move over the app tiles you want to delete from the preview area.
After you finish moving your apps, press “Close” on the top of each tile to close them out completely.
Delete Inactive Apps
Because LG TVs have so little internal storage, it’s best to delete any apps you no longer use. This will help free up space on your TV and might even stop the “out of memory” message. To delete your inactive apps, follow these steps:
- Push the Home button on your remote.
- Select “Settings.”
- Go to the “General” tab.
- Select “Apps.”
- Click “Delete” or “Disable.”
Some pre-loaded apps cannot be deleted, but disabling them will remove them from the TV’s memory.
Update Your LG Smart TV Software
Sometimes, you may receive an “out of memory” error message when your TV’s software is outdated. To remedy this, check for available updates by following the steps below:
- Push the Home button on your remote.
- Select “Settings,” then “General.”
- Choose “About This TV.”
- Select “Check for Updates.”
- If there is an available update, download and install it.
After the installation completes, power off the TV for approximately 30 seconds before turning it back on.
Perform a Factory Reset
If all else fails, performing a factory reset on your TV is your best bet. This erases all your personal data from your TV and reverts it to your factory settings.
You will need to log back into all your accounts, but it will most likely clear the “out of memory” message. You can perform a factory reset through the following steps:
- Press the Smart button on your remote.
- Click the gear icon at the top right of your screen.
- Select “General,” then “Reset to Initial Settings.”
After everything resets, your TV will appear the same way it did when you first purchased it.
Still Need More memory?
If you have a lot of apps you cannot live without, it might be time to switch over to a device like Apple TV 4K or Chromecast. With the Apple TV, you have access to either 32 GB or 64GB, more than enough space to keep and access everything you need. The Chromecast comes in a bit lower at 8GB, but is a bit more affordable than the Apple TV 4K.

At this point the LG brand is well-known enough that we don’t really need to explain what they do. They’ve done all of their own talking in that regard, proving themselves more than adept at supplying the world with high quality and reliable TVs.
Sure, they may cost a little more than a lot of their competitors, but it is more than a fair trade-off considering the build quality that you’re getting.
Overall, we have rarely ever had to put together a troubleshooting guide for the LG brand, but no brand can be totally perfect. That’s just not the way that tech works, unfortunately. Eventually, something is always going to give.
In general, these issues are just the result of a minor bug or glitch and can easily be fixed by even the most novice of you out there. The “this app will now restart to free up more memory” problem just happens to be one of these issues. So, seeing that it is incredibly annoying and can be easily fixed, let’s show you how it’s done!
Watch Video Below: Summarized Solutions For “This App Will Now Restart To Free Up More Memory” Error on LG TV
1. Try giving the TV a reboot
As we mentioned above, the issue is more than likely to be the result of a minor bug or glitch that is hampering the TV’s performance. Sometimes, all it takes to clear these out is a simple reboot. The process for this is really simple.
All you need to o is unplug the TV from its power source. Then, just let it sit there doing nothing for a minimum of 20 seconds. After that, the TV can be switched on again. That will be enough to fix the issue for more than just a few of you. If it hasn’t, not to worry – we will just need to try something else.
2. Connect the TV to the net using the Ethernet port
One of the best things about smart TVs is that you rarely need to think about their connection to the internet. You just set it up and it’s good to go – no need to hook it up directly using the Ethernet port or anything like that.
Most of the time, this all works totally fine and without any errors. However, there are a lot of errors that can crop up when you are using a wireless connection.
That is why we would suggest that you hook it up directly, using the Ethernet port. When using this, the connection that you have will be much more stable and faster too! The main point of this exercise is to prove a point. If the TV is now working totally normally, it was the wireless connection that was to blame.
If it isn’t, the problem is likely to be at the end of your internet service provider. The most likely result is that your connection via the Ethernet port will cause the connection to be strong enough that your apps will work perfectly.
3. Reset the TV to its factory settings
If the issue still hasn’t resolved itself, we think that the root cause will just be a really stubborn glitch that is clinging on to the system for dear life. Though the reboot above can clear some of these out, this method is much more effective.
The only reason that we didn’t suggest it straight away is that there is a downside. A factory reset will clear out any changes to the settings that you have made. Essentially, your LG will be like it was the day it came into your home.
With that in mind, the factory rest can be performed by opening up the settings on the TV and then go into the option that says support. In this tab, you will then need to go into the “general” tab and then into the reset option.
From here, all you need to do is “reset to initial/default settings” and then confirm your action when prompted. This will begin the process. You don’t need to do anything else. The TV will take care of all of it and reboot when it is done.
4. Check for updates of the software version
LG TVs are fairly high-end and complicated devices. As such, there is a team of dedicated professionals working away in the background, constantly making sure that the software is up to the task of running its more complex functions.
Because of this, there are frequently software updates that will need to be installed on your TV to keep it pristine. If you miss a few of these over time, the performance of your TV can really begin to suffer.
The good news is that there is a new update out that will fix all of these issues for you in one fell swoop. Simply check for updates on your TV and make sure you have the most recent version.
5. Make sure you don’t have too many apps
When you get the “this app will now restart to free up more memory” notice on an LG TV, it could simply be the case that you have too many apps on there that are taking up too much memory.
What we would recommend that you do is go through your selection of apps. Have a look at what you use and what ones have simply become redundant and forgotten about over time. Then, simply delete the ones that you don’t need anymore.
This clears out a whole load of memory space and will allow your TV to work better and faster. For bonus points, make sure to also delete the settings of the apps you are removing from your LG TV’s WebOS. That’s extra free space again.
6. Make sure that there is sufficient background space
This tip is for those of you who have only noticed this problem beginning after the recent download of an app. This new app may have barged in and cause the configuration problems you’re currently having.
It could also just be hoarding too much space in the background, causing everything else to simply crash. If you have just noticed these issues after a recent app download, delete the app and you will probably notice that the issue is gone.
The Last Word
Unfortunately, that’s all we have for this fix. If you have tried all of these and haven’t had any luck, we would recommend that you get in touch with customer support to try get the problem fixed.
While you are talking with them, make sure to let them know everything that you have tried to fix it yourself. That way, they will be able to find a solution for you much quicker.
