Alternator fault battery is not being charged ошибка ауди a4

Im posting this as an update to what caused this message to come up, to help future A4 owners diagnose this issue and also to see if anyone else has had this same problem.

So to bring everyone up to speed on what’s going on ill start from one week ago today, I had scheduled with my local Audi dealer (Ken gaff Audi of Lehi for anyone local to me) to have some recall work done. The recall work involved replacing the electronic water pump because of known electronic failure causing fires. The work was scheduled for last Monday, it took half the day to complete and had my car back by the end of the day. Side note, I have simple add ons done to my car. Ive got wheels and tires and a new grill, nothing internal, no tune, no exhaust, nothing, its fairly stock to keep the warranty. Back to the story. Got my car back no problems nothing to lead me to believe that something wasn’t done properly. Three days later, getting onto the freeway less than a mile from my house the error message beeped at me that there was an alternator fault and battery was not charging. I pulled to the side of road immediately popped the hood car running to inspect if something was obviously wrong. Nothing caught my eye and I work at a car shop so I figured id be better off getting my car to the shop so I could use the battery tester and obd2 scan tool.

Made it to my work few miles away and no noticeable issues with the car, no other codes pulling up, no electronic systems failing or turning due to lack of power. I decided to wait till after work to take a look at it. For my lunch break I took the car down the street and first thing I noticed turning the car on, the error message had gone away. Fast forward to end of day, I decided to drive the car without diagnosing anything cause I convinced myself throughout the day it was prolly the rain we’d been having for two weeks straight just got some water up some electronics.

Next day drove the car to work no issues, no codes and the same went for two consecutive days. Friday rolls around and the car flashes the error message again right as I start it up in the morning. Drove to work with the code, no issues and same situation happened that day. Error message had gone away by time I went to lunch.

I drove the car until the following Thursday, when the error message came up for the third time. I was off work that day and had time to run some tests on the car. First thing I looked over was the battery, it tested 500 out of 800 CCA which I expected due to «bad alternator». I ran an alternator test and it came with no issues found. It was turning out 13.8Volts which Is right where it should be at idle. Error message was gone by time I was done. I didnt come up with anything wrong.

Until today. I drove the car to work and immediately the car brought the message up on the freeway. I decided its time I called the dealership, because obviously something was wrong that I couldn’t figure the cause of the error message. I hate to be that customer trying to connect dots between work we had done and future issues with the car that had no relevance. Ive been doing the car shop game long enough to know that dealing with those customers sucks but, I’m also knowledgeable enough to understand that an electric water pump would involve some sort of disconnect from power and if not done properly can damage other components. I set an appt for The upcoming Monday to have the car serviced.

Of course the universe had other plans and I didnt make it back from the lunch break lol. In the middle of a drive through, a slow death of all electronics occurred. First the abs, traction control, engine light and an error saying failure popped up. Then power steering, tpms, transmission, and every code imaginable and every message flashed through, even codes I didnt know existed popped up. Then the Audi MMI shut off, and finally the music stopped and the car died. I Pulled the key, and tried restarting it immediately. Nothing even flickered. Somehow managed to turn pull some random life out of the car to get it into neutral and no one one was behind me so I cracked the door and Fred flinestoned my baby into a parking stall.

So as of right now (Friday) got the car towed to the dealer that did the original recall work. The service advisor wasnt much to try and help diagnose at the counter but he pretty much said he has only seen a handful of alternators go bad and that he doesn’t think it was a random event to happen after what work was done. Calming my nerves a little to prepare for whatever expense is prolly going to be served to me

Please bear with me this is my first post on the forum and I do not know a lot about the ins and outs of cars.
Here is my problem, a few months ago my car would randomly die with no warning — it wouldn’t tell me my battery is low and to charge it.
What would happen is randomly, I will get a warning light on the dash, something along the lines of ‘alternator fault: battery not being charged’. and the electrics slowly start turning themselves off, radio etc. When I stop and turn the car off the battery is ‘dead’ and needs a jumpstart, upon jumpstarting the car fires back into life (as expected) and only after this do I get a warning saying something like ‘battery is low: please recharge’. The strange thing is once it is jump started, I can more or less turn the car off straight away and it will start no problem. How is this the case, if my battery is ‘dead’ can it start up without having to recharge?

I brought it to one mechanic and he replaced the battery, a month later it happened again. I then brought it back to the same mechanic and he said it is something to do with the battery terminal at the front of the car and he has bypassed the signal going to this terminal. A month later it happened again. He said with the bypass it should fix the problem, it shouldn’t only work intermittenly, so he replaced the battery terminal, a month later it happened again.

It has now happened twice in the past week and there are no tell tale signs of when it is going to happen until the alternator fault comes on the dash but by that point its too late. On top of it happening twice in the past week, another thing happened — I was driving and all of the electrics shut off — radio, windows, speedometer, dashboard — everything. Lots of warning lights were on the dash, so I assumed it was going to die. I pulled over turned the car off and turned it on straight away again and it started with the electrics all back to normal?

Over the past week the car has brought up random faults that I have never got mid way through a joruney, when I get to my destination and I am on the return joruney the warning lights that were on are gone.
A few examples of these lights include: Glow plug warning light flashing, something on the centre dash saying ‘Brake warning: bring to your nearest garage’ (but the brakes were working fine) and a few other faults but they do not cause me any problems as they go away once the car is restarted.

I am just wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences? As I have only had the car for just over a year and have already spent in excess of £1400 on problem after problem and the car only cost me £3350, so I want to get a rough idea on what the problem is before I spend anymore money on it because if it is another expensive repair, I think I am better of getting a new car.

This is the message that just popped up on the dash when my wife started our ‘013 Q7 — no prior issues at all; based on battery life, we were planning on replacing the battery this fall, as recommended by our local mechanic (Audi dealer had recommended replacing it in February, when it was performing cold starts just fine). Also, wife reports the car starts, but steering wheel won’t turn — this occurred simultaneous to getting the warning light! So the car will drive straight forward and backward, but can’t turn the wheel. So she is waiting on AAA.

Any ideas? I sure don’t want to have to replace the alternator if it doesn’t need it. We were planning on replacing the battery, which will need it, but started her on the coldest day of the year (-22) in Chicago, and the steering thing is simply bizarre. She claims she jiggled the key every which way to try and unlock the wheel, to no avail. Local mechanic has alternator for $559 if it needs it as opposed to $1,200 for Audi, and if it needs an alternator, will replace battery, alternator, and belt for $998 with a break on labor (Audi wanted $600 just to replace the battery alone).

-Just want to make sure we turn over every stone, before a slew of new parts puts us in the poorhouse. Any other (hopefully far more minor) issues that could turn on the alternator fault notice, or lock the steering? Also anyone know what the factory warranty was on these? We only have 44k miles.
